hiphopera - Innovative Qualification for Young People is an EQUAL initiative for young job seekers aged between 15 and 21 funded by the European Social Fund and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour. The project, which is scheduled to run until 30 June 2007, is divided into two phases (the first ended 30 June 2006; casting for the second phase starts on 10 July 2006). At the end of each project year participants put on a performance they have studied, planned and prepared themselves.
The target group of hiphopera are young adults who have no career plans and who are difficult to motivate. They have made various attempts to follow a career (e.g. apprenticeships, trainings and employment) but have failed either to complete their trainings or retain their jobs. |

The aim of hiphopera is to stimulate the young adults' creative potential and enhance their self-confidence to help them orient themselves to new job opportunities and integrate them into the labour market. By participating in the study, preparation and performance of a show the young job seekers have the opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of occupations and fields of work. These broad experiences will help them decide their future career path and motivate them to send applications for traineeships and workplaces they are interested in, or they may even start work on completion of the project. |
The project consists of four parts:
In the art workshops project participants receive training in rhythm, music, dance and drama, and gain an insight into theatre design and stage technology. The young adults form an ensemble which serves to demonstrate that every participant plays an instrumental role - whether they are performers, stage technicians or in |

charge of stage preparation. By taking on responsibilities, the young adults develop key skills such as the ability to work in a team, dealing with conflicts and creative approaches to conflict solving.
The stage workshops familiarize participants with a wide range of occupations and areas of work (they learn to work with wood, metal and textiles, do painting, work in a restaurant etc.). The activities are closely linked with the preparation of the show, as the young adults are encouraged to produce scenery, props, costumes etc. by working with a variety of materials and trying out various techniques.
In the learning workshops participants receive training in German, mathematics and computing. Special emphasis is placed on their written and verbal communication and basic mathematical skills.
Social workers provide personal counselling for project participants on all kinds of problems (debts, housing, family conflicts etc.) and assist them in planning their future career paths for the time after the project. They support participants in finding training and apprenticeship places as well as employment.
The young adults are financially supported by the AMS Vienna (Public Employment Service) during the whole of the project duration.
hiphopera - Innovative Qualification for Young People is a joint project between nine organisations: waff PM - waff Programm Management GmbH, Volkshilfe Wien, Volkshilfe Beschäftigung, WUK - Verein zur Schaffung offener Kultur- und Werkstättenhäuser, Wien Work - integrative Betriebe und AusbildungsgesmbH, AMS Vienna, the Vienna Chamber of Labour, the Vienna Economic Chamber and WAFF - Wiener ArbeitnehmerInnenförderungsfonds. |
